"At Purgasm, we believe in creating orgasmically pure products and making them accessible to all."
Q: What inspired the name, "Purgasm Shop"?
A: I wanted something different and I wanted it to feel authentic to me. My main thoughts were that I wanted the name to capture and evoke an energy and feeling within people who saw/heard it. My goal was to create a product line that was:
- Natural and pure (no harsh chemicals),
- deliciously scented,
-I wanted each ingredient to have a purpose (ex. I don’t synthetic dyes, instead I use spices and clays to add color to bath bombs and soaps because they’re great for acne, detoxing the skin, etc).
- and so good that it that gave people an elated feeling (almostorgasmic-in the nicest wayJ) when they experienced them…
I played around with all sorts of names in my head and then it just clicked-Pure Gasm. I altered the spelling to Purgasm Shop. *Note, at one time I also created specialty massage candles and that played a role in the name, too). These items are now only offered during Valentine’s Day.
Q: How were you motivated to start this business?
A: I’ve always been in love with anything that shows true creativity. I grew with “hippie/free spirited” parents who valued creativity (they are/were both musically inclined and in bands, into painting, writing, …just being creative). So, creativity comes natural for me. I was in a really transitional state when I decided to start a business. I’d always liked making stuff, but it wasn’t until I had a child, ended a relationship, moved back home, and decided to “go natural” that the idea of starting a business came up. After the birth of my child, I went on an “all natural/organic frenzy” and I didn't want to use or expose my child to harmful chemicals. I started reading labels and throwing stuff away in favor of my own concoctions (shea butter, tea tree/lavender essential oil, and olive oil were my cure for EVERYTHING during this time). I became a vegetarian. I became more spiritual and I just went through a serious soul searching phase. I remember searching the web and looking at some of the ingredients in many natural hair/skin care products, herbal healing salves, etc and thinking “ wow-I can make that and incorporate some of my own ideas”! So, I started researching, experimenting, and using my gut as a guide and I started creating all natural products that felt true for me. I gave my first set of creations(whipped butters, bath salts, and body scrubs) to my family as Christmas gifts in 2010 and I’ve been focused on my business since then. I think that over the past year, I’ve had a refocus and I’ve become more serious about growing my brand and getting my products into people’s hands.
Q: Is this a full time job for you or just something on the side that you love to do?
A: I’m working really hard to make this my life’s workJ. I’d love to be able to leave corporate America in 2013 and create Purgasm Shop products full time (that’s a goal/intention of mine). Right now, I have a corporate career and I’m a single mom of a 4 year old-so I feel like I have 3 full time jobs. My normal schedule goes something like this: 8am-5pm corporate America, 6pm-10pm Mommyhood, 10pm-1 or 2am (and alternating weekends) Purgasm Shop.
Q: What is the self life of your products?
A: Shelf Life
· Non-water based products (ex. Ultra Whipped Butters, Bath Bombs, Sugar Bean Scrubs, etc)-I recommend use within 18 months-2 years. (Body Scrubs-18 months (less if exposed to frequent water, more if hands are not used to scoop product and container is kept clean and dry).
· The Lather/Shampoo Bars I generally recommend use within 2 years-not because the products will “go bad”, but simply because the products work better when the infused herbs, botanicals are fresher.
· New water based items are scheduled for release next month (ex. Deep Conditioning Masks, Curl Defining Gel, etc) and they may have a shorter shelf life-probably 6 or so ( I try to use mild preservatives to maintain the integrity of the product and our belief that the products should work good for you, but be good to youJ.)
Q: What are some of the major benefits of your products?
A: Major benefits-healthier and softer hair and skin, a natural glow, renewed skin (our exfoliating products work wonders for hydrating the skin, removing dead skin cells, and helping healthier ones regenerate). All of my products are infused with botanicals and/or essential oils which impart various benefits to the hair, skin. My candles use soy wax (cleaner burning, less pollution) and phthalate free fragrances. You also have the benefit of knowing that your products are made lovingly with safe ingredients that are naturally beneficial for your hair, skin, and the environment. I like to believe that Purgasm Shop allows customers to experience products that they love and feel good about; knowing that the ingredients are hand selected to love them back. I want people to know that natural products can smell just as good (or better) and be just as effective (or better) than chemically laden products without the harmful side effects.
